Visitor's tax Wernigerode

The town of Wernigerode is recognised as a health resort and the district of Schierke as a health resort. So that we can offer our guests an attractive programme during their visit, the town levies a visitor's tax. The revenue is used to pay for the construction, acquisition, expansion, improvement, renewal and maintenance of facilities used by tourists in accordance with the visitor's tax statutes.

These include the following, for example:

- Free local bus transport - almost throughout the Harz region
- Financing of tourist infrastructure (hiking trails, cross-country ski trails, parks)
- Free cultural events (Schierk Music Summer, Schierk Winter Sports Weeks)
- Free events & markets (town hall festival, chocolate festival, Christmas market)
- ...
 

On arrival at your accommodation, the Wernigerode & Schierk hosts will issue you with a guest card. Please make sure you fill in your guest card correctly, as it is valid as a travel ticket for the free local bus service (HATIX ticket) in the Harz Mountains, for example.

The visitor's tax is paid directly to the accommodation. The individual accommodation providers will let you know how payment is handled. Some collect the visitor's tax together with the accommodation costs, others prefer to receive it in cash on site.
 

In addition to the provision of many tourist facilities, you can use local public bus transport free of charge in almost the entire Harz region thanks to your visitor's tax payment. This also applies to the districts of Goslar, parts of Göttingen and Mansfeld-Südharz. You will receive the HATIX ticket when you pay your visitor's tax to your landlord/landlady.
To the HATIX ticket

- HATIX ticket - this means free travel on public bus transport in the Harz Mountains
For example, a return journey between Wernigerode and Schierke costs €7.80 with a single ticket. With a day ticket it is still €6.80. If you pay a €3.00 visitor's tax, you save at least €3.80.

Your host or hostess will give you the Wernigerode coupon booklet when you arrive at your accommodation. In this booklet you will find a number of coupons with discounts on admission to leisure facilities in Wernigerode and Schierke.

And when you present the booklet at the tourist information centres in Wernigerode and Schierke, you will receive a discount on the purchase of our Wernigerode or Schierke coffee.

Overview of all discounts

The visitor's tax is € 3.50 per overnight stay and person liable to pay, including statutory VAT. A reduction or exemption from payment of the visitor's tax is possible.

The following are not liable to pay (selection)
1. persons who are only staying in the collection area for the purpose of work/vocational training.
2. children up to the age of 6.
3. severely disabled persons with a degree of disability of 100 and their accompanying person, insofar as the disabled person is permanently dependent on the accompaniment according to the official ID.
4. the third and each additional child in families with several children in the household up to the age of 18.

50 % discount (selection):
1. severely disabled persons whose degree of disability is at least 50.
2. children after the age of 6 and up to the age of 18.

The income from the visitor's tax is used to pay for the free bus transport service. We are charged the bus ticket for every guest who stays overnight in Wernigerode or Schierke. Regardless of whether he or she uses the service or not. In order to maintain the service, it is therefore necessary for all overnight guests to make their contribution to the environmentally friendly alternative.

Why not leave the car at home? It saves money and helps to reduce traffic in the city centres and on the roads in the Harz region.
